A 5-foot-deep sinkhole appeared on RK Mutt Road in Mylapore, Chennai, triggering major traffic delays and spotlighting concerns over local infrastructure stability.
The collapse happened Thursday afternoon, prompting swift road closures and diversions. A woman traffic police officer narrowly avoided injury as the ground suddenly gave way beneath her, but no one was hurt.
Metrowater officials linked the incident to a corroded, 25-year-old underground sewer line. The weakened pipe led to soil displacement, causing the road to cave in.
Crews immediately began repair work, aiming to complete it within a week.
This follows other recent sinkholes in Mylapore and nearby areas, often blamed on damaged drains and the ongoing Chennai Metro Rail project.
Residents remain uneasy about repeated cave-ins and traffic chaos, urging authorities to conduct rigorous inspections and maintenance as development continues.
Chennai faces mounting pressure to balance rapid metro expansion with safe, reliable infrastructure for all.
